What the best e-signature software is for
Identity of the signer as far as email and an audit log can prove it, a tamper-evident file, and reminders so the contract does not die in a tab. Legally, requirements vary by country and by document. A tool's marketing does not legalize a deed, a will, or whatever your jurisdiction treats as special. Ask counsel for those. Do not ask the homepage.
Templates are the second job. If every agreement is a one-off Word file, you do not have a signing problem yet. You have a drafting problem. Fix the template, then automate the signature.
Who should skip paid e-sign plans
A single freelance contract a quarter can live on a limited free tier or even a careful PDF signature, if you keep the file. Paying DocuSign for that is theater.
If your customers must sign in person, or the document needs a notarization the tool does not actually provide, stop shopping for a nicer email. The workflow is different.
How we tested these e-signature tools
Last tested September 2026. I sent the same two-page agreement and a one-page consent form through each product to a second email I control, signed on a laptop and on an iPhone, and downloaded the completed PDF plus whatever certificate or history the product offered. PandaDoc also got a short proposal with a price table, because that is its actual job.
Dropbox Sign was the least ceremony for the agreement. DocuSign was the most familiar signing page and the most admin for a template I will reuse. PandaDoc was awkward for the plain agreement and obviously better once the document had a price and a section the signer had to read. Mobile signing worked in all three. The painful one was a field I had placed too close to the edge. That was me, and the signer noticed.
I did not test identity verification add-ons, HIPAA setups, or international eID rules. If a regulator cares how you sign, their rule beats a reviewer's preference.
