Obsidian is my pick of the best Notion alternatives for people who want markdown files on disk and search that still works on a plane. Anytype is the one to try if you want local-first notes with objects and relations, without adopting a second brain made of plugins. Capacities is the calmer pick if you already think in objects and daily notes and you will accept their sync.
Stay on Notion if a team already shares databases there. Moving a wiki to feel ideologically correct is a month of lost work. I have the export folder to prove it.

Notes are files. Sync is optional and, if you pay for Obsidian Sync or use a folder you already trust, understandable. Plugins can rebuild half of Notion. They can also eat a weekend.
Local-first storage, relations, and a graph that is not only backlinks. It feels closer to a personal system than to a company workspace, which is either the appeal or the limitation.
You define objects, you write daily notes, and the links are the organization. It is less of a construction kit than Obsidian and less of a company suite than Notion.
Why the best Notion alternatives exist
The complaints are specific. The app feels heavy. Offline is an afterthought. The per-member price got real once guests became teammates. Or someone looked at the database they built and realized they wanted a spreadsheet tool, not a wiki.
Those are different exits. Obsidian answers the file complaint. Airtable or Coda answers the database complaint. Switching to another all-in-one because the icon is newer does not answer either.
Who should not leave Notion
If five people update the same project tracker every day, Notion is doing a job these alternatives do worse. Fix the workspace. Delete the abandoned wikis. Then decide.
If your notes are meeting scratch pads, Apple Notes or a single Notion page is enough. A migration project for scratch pads is procrastination with better branding.
How we tested these Notion alternatives
Last tested September 2026. I exported a personal Notion space of about 300 notes, including meeting notes, a reading list, and one database of article ideas. I imported what each app would take and recreated the rest by hand for a week. Devices were a MacBook Pro and an iPhone 16. I edited offline on a train and checked what survived sync.
Obsidian was the only one where the train did not matter. Anytype kept the relations I bothered to model and lost the casual pages I had not typed into an object. Capacities was the pleasant daily note and the one whose export I trusted least until I tried it. The Notion export itself was a pile of markdown and CSV. Plan on cleanup. Anyone who tells you it is one click is selling something.
I did not test team permissions, guest billing, or migrations of a company workspace with thousands of pages. Do that as a pilot with one team, not as a flag day.
