Lucidchart is worth paying for when a company needs polished diagrams that non-designers can edit together without a tutorial. Whimsical is the pick when the diagram sits next to a doc or a wireframe and you want the lightest serious editor.
FigJam and Miro are whiteboards. They can draw a flow. They get worse as the flow becomes a document you maintain. If the boxes must stay accurate next quarter, use a diagram tool. If the boxes are a workshop that dies on Friday, use the whiteboard you already pay for.

How we tested these diagramming tools
Last tested September 2026. I drew the same checkout flow, about fifteen nodes, in each app, then a small cloud sketch with a database and two services. Files went to Google Drive for diagrams.net, to Lucidchart's sharing, and to a Whimsical workspace. A second person had to add one branch without a call. MacBook Pro, Chrome.
diagrams.net was the quickest to a file I could commit next to notes. The second person found the UI fussier and still finished. Lucidchart looked the most like something you could put in a deck without apologizing. Whimsical was the fastest drawing experience and the least convincing architecture sketch, which matches the product.
I did not test Lucidchart enterprise admin, offline desktop use beyond diagrams.net's desktop app in passing, or real-time editing with more than two people. Workshops are a different test. Bring the tool you already know.
