A naked screenshot is often better. If the UI is the story, a phone bezel is decoration. I have hidden a confusing screen inside a pretty angle. It did not become less confusing. It became harder to read.

Browser-based, fast, and good enough for a hero image. You are not learning a 3D app. You are framing a rectangle you already captured.
Drop a screenshot on a phone or laptop and render a still or a turn. For an app store set or a launch video plate, the control is in a different league from a web frame.
A component for the phone, a screenshot mask, and the rest of the landing page in the same file. When the screen changes, you update one image instead of reopening a renderer.
What the best device mockup tools should not hide
The interface. If the status bar, the angle, or the reflection makes the type hard to read, the mockup failed. Tilt less. Or do not tilt.
Out-of-date hardware is the other tell. A bezel from a phone you no longer support makes the product look older than the build. Update the frame when you update the screenshot. I have left an old bezel up for a month. Someone noticed in a review, not in our standup.
Who should skip mockup software
Documentation and support screenshots should be flat. A 3D phone in a help article is how you waste the reader's eye.
If you have one screenshot and no layout, export it. The frame is not a strategy for an empty page.
How we tested these device mockup tools
Last tested September 2026. I framed the same iPhone screenshot three ways: a social image, a landing-page hero, and a short turn. Shots and Figma ran in the browser on a MacBook Pro. Rotato ran as the Mac app. I timed the first acceptable export, then changed one word in the UI and updated the mockup.
Shots won the first export. Rotato won the hero once I cared about the angle, and it lost the update test because I had to re-render. Figma lost the first export and won the update, because the screenshot was a fill in a component. That second test is the one marketing teams forget when they pick a tool from a gallery.
I did not test Android device libraries in depth, print-sized renders, or Rotato's full animation timeline for a commercial. Bring your own screens. A mockup of a placeholder is a picture of a placeholder.
