Dictation is live. The words should land where you are writing, with the ums removed and the punctuation guessed. Transcription is a file you already recorded. Buying one app for both is how people end up with a transcript window and a copy-paste step they resent.
Accuracy on names will disappoint you. Spell the client once, or keep a snippet. I spent longer fixing a surname than I saved on the sentence around it. The win shows up on ordinary prose, not on a list of proper nouns.

Open offices. You will not talk to your computer at the volume these models like, and your neighbors will not like it either. A walking loop or a closed door is the real setup.

How we tested these AI dictation apps
Last tested September 2026 on a 14-inch MacBook Pro. I dictated the same 180-word email, a Slack-length reply, and a paragraph that included a product name and a URL. I also transcribed a 12-minute voice memo in MacWhisper and in Superwhisper's file flow where it applied. Wispr Flow was used inside Mail, Notes, and a browser text box.
Flow was the fastest path from mouth to sent-looking email, and the one I would not use for a sensitive recording. Superwhisper's on-device mode mangled the URL and kept the rest. MacWhisper's transcript of the memo was the best of the three on that file and useless while I was trying to answer Slack.
I did not test iPhone keyboards beyond noting Flow has one, medical vocabulary, or languages other than English. Accents and background noise change the result more than the marketing clip suggests. Try a noisy room before you commit.
